Chargers stun Sailors, move into 1st

EDISON HIGH upset Newport Harbor 58-51 Wednesday night in a boys’ basketball game that pushed the Chargers into first place in the Surf League.

Edison High’s boys’ basketball team pulled off a major upset Wednesday night, stunning Newport Harbor 58-51 at the Charger gym.

The Sailors came into the game with a 21-1 record, compared to Edison’s 16-7 mark, but that didn’t seem to make much of a difference.  The visitors had a 24-19 lead at halftime, but the home team outscored them the rest of the way, with a 16-6 edge in the third period being decisive.

EHS surged to a 2-0 mark and first place in the Surf League behind the 19-point effort of Jack Horton, along with 15 from Kaden Headington.

Edison will host Los Alamitos (7-13 overall and 0-3 in league) on Friday.

Also on Wednesday, the Garden Grove High boy’s team turned back Godinez 64-52 in a Golden West League game. The Argonauts, now 4-1 in league and 19-3 overall, were led by Jerry Martinez (18 points) and the duo of Kyler Torres and Sebastian Castro with 14 points each.

Grove will host Westminster on Friday.
