THE PARTIAL shutdown of the federal government is in its 29th day.

The stalemate leading to the partial shutdown of the federal government continued on Saturday despite an offer by President Donald Trump to break the logjam.

In a speech, the president offered to extend temporary protections for those brought illegally into the United States – called “Dreamers” –  in exchange for approval for $5.7 billion to build a wall along the nation’s border with Mexico.

His offer also included protections for those fleeing disaster areas. He called it a “common sense compromise.”

Democrats were unmoved. Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi called the offer “a compilation of previously rejected initiatives” and predicted it would not be approved by the House of Representatives, where the Democrats now hold a solid majority.

The shutdown is now in its 29th day.
