Oilers start fast and hang on in 6-5 win

WEDNESDAY’S local high school baseball results.

Huntington Beach High’s baseball team built up a 4-0 first inning lead and held off a late challenge by Corona del Mar to win a non-league game 6-5 Wednesday at the Oiler diamond.

The visiting Sea Kings scored two in the fourth and fifth innings and one in the seventh to tighten the contest.  A pair of runs by the Oilers in the bottom of the fourth provided the margin of victory.

With the win, the orange-and-black improved their overall record to 9-2. CDM is 7-2-1.

Also on Wednesday, Edison handed a 14-3 pounding to Laguna Beach.  The Chargers are 9-4 overall and the Breakers fell to 7-7.

In an Empire League contest, the Cypress Centurions followed Tuesday’s 2-1 squeaker win with an 11-7 slugfest victory over Pacifica at the Cent field.  Cypress is 2-0 in league now and 12-1 overall. The Mariners are 0-2 and 5-8.
