UPDATE: The driver killed in a crash on the Garden Grove Freeway on June 9 has been identified. According to the Orange County Coroner’s Office the decedent is Carlos Lara, 58. No city of residence is listed.
A fatal crash Sunday morning took one person’s life and closed the Garden Grove Freeway for several hours.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident took place on the eastbound side of the freeway between Valley View Street and Goldenwest/Knott around 4 a.m.
A Honda sedan went out of control and crashed at the right side of the freeway. The driver walked away from the vehicle, but a big-rig truck struck the disabled car. The impact ejected the truck driver into the center median, injuring him fatally. The car caught fire, engulfing the truck, which was hauling U.S. Mail under contract.
The driver of the Honda, identified only as a 26-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
