4 dead, 15 wounded at Gilroy festival

THREE PEOPLE are dead and 12 wounded in a shooting Sunday evening at the Gilroy Garlic Festival (Shutterstock).

UPDATE: The man believed to be the shooter at the Gilroy Garlic Festival Sunday evening was shot and killed shortly after police arrived, bringing the death toll to four people. The number of wounded has been updated to 15 people.

One of those killed by the gunman was a 6-year-old boy.

A shooting at the annual Garlic Festival in Gilroy, California has left three people dead, 13 wounded and dozens injured in a panicky stampede Sunday evening.

According to the Associated Press, the violence began when a man armed with what was described as an assault rifle began shooting into the food area of the festival that attracts over 100,000 people each year.

The gunfire sent people running for safety, resulting in injuries which one source put at 60 people hurt. One suspect was reported to be in custody, although police are still investigating the situation.

Gilroy is a city of about 60,000 people located roughly 30 miles southeast of San Jose. The area is known for its cultivation and processing of the aromatic crop.
