Westminster Mall’s future is discussed

A “community character discussion” on the future of the Westminster Mall is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 19 from 6-8 p.m.

Discussed will be aspects of what the mall should look like in the future. City staff will provide an overview and request input on matters such as:

  • gateways, entries and views
  • Bolsa Avenue and Edwards Street edge treatments
  • open spaces
  • proposed land uses and heights.

The event will be held in the interior of the mall near the Discount Shoe Warehouse/Sears entrance.

Westminster Mall is located at Bolsa Avenue and Goldenwest Street. Opened in 1974, the mall was once one of Orange County’s largest and busiest, but changing shopping habits and competition has resulted in high vacancy rates in the aging center.

Tips, support offered for caregivers

The OC Read Speaker Series, along with the Family Caregiver Resource Center will offer practical tips and community support for caregivers in a session on Thursday, Aug. 22 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Garden Grove Main Library.

Attendees will be able to discover resources for tutoring sessions, network with fellow tutors and learners and learn how to help yourself or another adult improve reading and writing skills.

Reopening of Westmont Arts Academy on Aug. 22

A grand re-opening event will be held on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 10 a.m. at Westmont Elementary School in Westminster to celebrate the newly modernized Westmont Visual and Performing Arts Academy.

Westmont, opened in 1962, has undergone campus renovations to improve the on-campus academy. The brightly colored campus has new infrastructure, cabinetry, windows, flooring and specialized rooms for dance, band and art. The multi-purpose room has new stage lighting, curtains and flexible seating.

Each wing of the campus is identified by the name of a famous artist, including Walt Disney, Vincent Van Gogh and Johann Sebastian Bach.

The school is located at 8251 Heil Ave. in Westminster. It’s part of the Ocean View School District, which serves north Huntington Beach and parts of Westminster and other cities.

Stanton city council meeting cancelled

The meeting of the Stanton City Council scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 13 has been cancelled. The next meeting is set for Tuesday, Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers, 7800 Katella Ave.
