Avenging an earlier loss at home, Garden Grove High’s boys’ basketball team defeated Ocean View 66-45 Friday night in the Seahawk gym to regain the lead in the Golden West League.

The Argonauts led almost from buzzer to buzzer, dominating on defense and under the boards. Jerry Martinez scored 21 to lead Grove, followed by Miguel Ortega with 20.

The Seahawks relied heavily on outside shooting, with Luke Washington canning 29 points with 21 of those coming on three-pointers.

SANDRA BALANDRAN (3 in dark uniform) goes up for a shot. She scored 21 points for Garden Grove’s girls’ team on Friday.

Grove lost the first contest between the two on Jan. 14 by a margin of 67-55. How did the Argonauts more than flip the score?

“We just played with better energy and better defense,” said coach Brian Girard. “I think in the first game, we were a little nervous. Today we played with energy.”

He cited Danny Sanchez and Ricky Robles as the “unsung heroes” of the game. “They had to step up and guard 34 [Washington] who just seemed to be making everything he threw up.”

The Argonauts are now 6-2 in league and 18-8 overall. Ocean View slipped to 5-3 and 15-11. Both have two games remaining in their league schedules, which will conclude on Feb. 6.

It was a good night for the GGHS girls’ team as well. The Argonauts defeated the Seahawks 56-33 to clinch no worse than a tie for the GWL title. Sandra Balandran scored 21 points as did Ashlee Dorantes. Santiago did the same in the girls’ Garden Grove League chase after defeating Bolsa Grande 50-22. Brianna Landeros had 31 points.

In the boys’ GGL race, Los Amigos remained in the lead by one game after besting Rancho Alamitos 59-50.
