President Donald Trump returned to the White House Monday afternoon from Walter Reed Hospital, declaring, “I feel good.” Earlier, he tweeted “Feeling really good. Don’t be afraid of COVID. Don’t let it dominate your life … I feel better than I did 20 years ago,” according to the various news reports.
Trump spent three nights at the hospital. He will continue to receive medical care at the White House. Earlier in the day, Dr. Sean P. Conley, the president’s personal physician, said that Trump “was not out of the woods yet.”
After the Marine One helicopter landed on the White House law, the president removed the mask he was wearing and entered the Executive Mansion. The trip from the hospital to White House was covered live by three major networks.
Trump’s comments about the coronavirus prompted some criticism from Democrats who argued that he was playing down the seriousness of a disease that has killed over 1 million people, including 209,000 Americans.
Nobel Prize in medicine to three scientists
Three scientists – two of them Americans – won the Nobel Prize for medicine today for their work in discovering hepatitis C, which attacks livers. That discovery has pointed the way to cure the disease.
Harvey J. Alter and Charles M. Rice (U.S.) shared the prize with Michael Houghton (born in Great Britain) for their work, which spanned several decades. The disease is not defeated, however, according to the Associated Press, as there are over 70 million cases annually and over 400,000 deaths.
The news: Stocks breathe a sigh of relief
Wall Street had a good Monday, perhaps relieved that President Donald Trump was leaving the hospital. The Dow rose by 465.83 points and the S&P 500 showed an increase of 60.19. Nasdaq increased by 257.47. • The U.S, Supreme Court opened its 2020 term on Monday with eight justices. In this term, the high court could decide cases including the constitutionality of college speech rules, how anti-bias laws might apply to religious organizations and “buffer” zones around abortion clinics, according to United Press International.
