Spartans, Cavs in playoff action

TWO LOCAL girls’ basketball teams are in playoff action today (Shutterstock).

 

UPDATE: The Orangewood Academy girls’ basketball team continues to find the going tough in the Open Division of the CIF-SS playoffs.

In their second game in Pool A Wednesday night, the Spartans lost 61-56 to West High of Torrance. Leading scorers for Orangewood were Aixchel Hernandez with 24 points, Hannah Stines with 21 and Keyla Romo with 11.

Now 0-2 in pool play, the Spartans will close out their season on Monday, June 7 against Centennial High of Corona. The winner of Pools A and B will meet for the title on Friday, June 11.

The 4AA quarterfinal game between Santiago and Immaculate Heart has been rescheduled to Thursday at the Cavalier gym.

Two local high school girls’ basketball teams are playing tonight in efforts to advance in the CIF-SS playoffs.

Orangewood Academy of Garden Grove is hosting West Torrance in Pool A play in Open Division. The Spartans are 12-6 overall after losing their first pool game to Windward 63-49.

Santiago, champs of the Garden Grove League (17-2 overall), will host Immaculate Heart (11-4) a Division 4AA quarterfinal game. The winner of that contest will advance to the semifinals on Saturday against the winner of the Mary Star of the Sea/Calabasas games.

On Tuesday, only one local boys’ basketball team survived in quarterfinal action. In Division 3A action, Marina (14-7) defeated St. Paul 60-59. The Vikings advance to the semifinals Friday against Shalhevet (20-2) of Los Angeles.

In 4AA play, Orangewood Academy lost 49-46 to Elsinore to finish the season at 14-13 and in D-5A, Western lost 76-29 to AGBU of Canoga Park to complete a 13-4 campaign. The acronym is for Armenian General Benevolent Union.
