A 15% corporate tax rate deal

A MINIMUM tax rate of 15 percent for large corporations has been agreed to by 20 developed nations (Shutterstock).

Under an agreement reached Saturday among the 20 nations at the G20 summit in Rome, a minimum tax rate of 15 percent would be paid by large corporations.

According to United Press International, the rate would go into effect in 2023 and is intended to prevent companies from moving profits to avoid paying taxes.

The new structure was a priority of President Joe Biden. However, the agreement among those developed nations would have to be approved at the national legislative levels to become effective.

Also on Saturday, Biden met with leaders from Great Britain, Germany and France to work on problems associated with the coronavirus pandemic and a nuclear agreement with Iran.

At present, the developed countries represented at the summit get 15 times more doses of vaccine than do the nations of sub-Saharan Africa, where the disease is still rampant, according to UPI. A goal of getting 70 percent of Earth’s population vaccinated within eight months was discussed.

Vote on two big Biden bills on Tuesday?

A vote on two of President Joe Biden’s top legislative priorities may come on Tuesday in the House of Representatives.

The Associated Press is reporting that a final compromise on a $1.75 trillion social safety net and climate change package may have been reached. If approved, the House could take up the more popular $1.1 trillion infrastructure bill.

If those pieces of legislation pass the House, they would go to the Senate for action. Democrats have slim minority positions in each chamber, and can afford no defections as Republicans appear to be united in their opposition.

Sports: Braves push Astros to the brink

Two seventh inning home runs gave the Atlanta Braves a 3-2 win over the Houston Astros Saturday in Game Four of the World Series, moving to within one victory of grabbing the championship trophy. The Braves now lead three games to one.

Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh, the Braves got solo home runs from Jorge Solor and Dansby Swanson for what proved to be the winning runs. Game Five will also be in Atlanta and is set to begin at 5:15 p.m.

In college football, USC evened its season record at 4-4 with a 41-24 victory over winless Arizona (0-8). The Trojans led 35-14 at the half, but the Wildcats rallied to make a close game of it.  UCLA (now 5-4) lost  44-24 to Utah (5-3).

Weather: Cooler, but not cold

You don’t need a weather report to know that today (Saturday) was cooler than the two previous days. Those autumnal temperatures will continue most of the week, warming gradually toward next weekend. In the West Orange County area, Sunday will be partly cloudy with a high of 70 and an overnight low of 56. Monday should be slightly warmer at 72 (54) under cloudy skies. In the coastal areas of Huntington Beach, Monday should have a high of 68 (low of 55), warming to 70 on Monday.
