Western High’s boys’ basketball team moved to the top of the Orange League standings with a 58-46 win over Anaheim High on Thursday night.
The Pioneers are now 2-0 in league and 7-8 overall. After building a 33-21 halftime lead, they survived a late charge by the Colonists to get the win.
Ahmad Hammouri scored 24 points for Western, including three three-pointers. He also hit seven of eight free throws. Jameson Labasan added 17 points and also made three treys. He sunk all four free throw attempts.
Anaheim is now 0-1 in league and 6-11 overall.
In girls’ basketball action, Calvary Chapel/Santa Ana defeated Orange 60-32 in a battle for first place in the Orange Coast League. The Eagles are 7-2 overall and 2-0 in league, while the Panthers are 1-1 and 6-3.
A non-league contest saw Corona del Mar defeat Marina 51-9. The Sea Kings are 8-8 and the Vikings are 5-11.
