New cases up, but below peaks

Confirmed new cases of coronavirus in Orange County increased in Wednesday’s count, but remained below the historic peaks of just a few days ago.

According to the county health agency, the latest number is 1,528 new cases, up from Tuesday’s 1,229, but about half of Monday’s three-day average of 3,122.

Deaths rose to 16 from 10 on Tuesday. Hospitalizations declined from 872 to 846 and the number of people being treated in intensive care units for COVID-19 slipped from 164 to 161.

So far, Orange County has had 520,166 cases, of which 400,630 are considered recovered. The total number of deaths is 6,126.

Across the nation, new cases have fallen 44 percent over a 14-day period, according to The New York Times, while deaths are up 39 percent.

In California, new cases are down 45 percent but deaths have increased 20 percent over a similar stretch, according to Los Angeles Times.
