Will we soon Duchess of Cornwall Camilla become Queen Camilla?
On Saturday, Queen Elizabeth II used the occasion of her Platinum Jubilee – seventy years as queen – to suggest that the wife of Prince Charles be granted the title of queen, when and if Charles ascends to the throne.
According to the Associated Press, the monarch said, “It is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”
Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorced in 1996; Camilla Bowles had a key role in breaking up that marriage. But when she wed Charles she was granted the title she new holds.
Elizabeth II is 95 years old; her first son, Charles, the Prince of Wales, is next in the line of succession when Elizabeth either steps down or dies. Charles is 73.
The queen is the longest-serving British monarch, and has not indicated any intention, or timeline, for resigning her position as the head of state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Trucker protest in Canada spreads
The “Freedom Convoy” of truckers, protesting restrictions tied to coronavirus mandates and restrictions has inspired large-scale protests and demonstrations not only in Ottawa – the Canadian capital – but also in Toronto and Quebec City.
According to The New York Times, the protests in those cities started with an assembly of truck drivers who drove from Western Canada to the capital to complain about regulations such as requiring truckers returning from the U.S. to show proof of vaccination.
Critics of the protests claim that it has clogged streets in the downtowns and resembled more of an “occupation” than an airing of grievances.
Sports: China wins first gold medal, but …
The Chinese team won the short-track speed ice-skating event, giving China the first goal medal of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Beijing.
But that was attended by some controversy. In the semifinal race, the U.S. team appeared to place second and thereby advance to the finals, but – upon review – the Americans were disqualified for allegedly “impeding” other skaters.
China, which had originally finished third, edged out Italy in the finals to take the gold.
Weather: It’s back to the Eighties
The temperature, that is. The forecast for the West Orange County area calls for a daytime high of 81 on Sunday and Monday under sunny skies. Things will get warmer on Wednesday and Thursday when the thermometer hits 85.
The rest of the country– east of California and Arizona – will continue to shiver with highs as low as 17 (Buffalo) and as toasty 30 in New York City. Snow is forecast for the Detroit area and upper Minnesota and North Dakota.
