Should Huntington Beach annex the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve?

The city council will consider how to approach that issue at its meeting tonight (Tuesday).

Councilmember Dan Kalmick has raised the issue and is asking for an update of previous feasibility studies about absorbing the Bolsa Chica wetlands into the city. The area is currently incorporated county territory, but is surrounded by Huntington Beach.

“With the incorporation of Sunset Beach and Brightwater,” wrote Kalmick in a memo on the issue, “ the annexation … would essentially complete the city’s corporate boundary. More importantly, the wetlands and uplands are ecological and tourist resources that would complement the diverse portfolio of amenities that help to make Huntington Beach a destination location.”

The council will meet in a virtual format via Zoom webinar. For members of the public wishing to comment in person, the council chambers will be open for that purpose.

A study session/closed session is scheduled for 4 p.m. and the regular meeting for 6 p.m.

  1. I think it would have a negative impact on the city coffers. The state is now responsible for the maintenance and also who knows in the future if a city council decides to developing the area for housing.

  2. The wetlands existing makes huntington beach a destination location. Whether they are considered county land or city land is completely irrelevant to tourists.
