Who controls the strategic city of Lysychansk in Ukraine?

According to United Press International, opposing sides are claiming the upper hand, a reflection of the complexity of the military situation in the eastern areas of the invaded nation.

The forces of the so-called Luhansk People’s Republic  – a breakaway region – are claiming to be in the city, but the Ukrainian army says it still controls the area.

Eastern Ukraine includes two areas with large Russian-speaking populations. Low-intensity conflict between the separatists and the central government has been waged since 2014.

Uvalde police chief quits city council

Pete Arredondo, chief of the Uvalde school district’s police force, has resigned his position on the Uvalde City Council.

According to USA Today, he quit in order to allow the city to “move forward without distractions.”

Arreondo is on administration leave from his school district job in the wake of widespread criticism of his response to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School. He has been accused of making “terrible decisions” and the police response has been termed an “abject failure” by state officials.

Three Ky. police officers killed

In Allen, Kentucky on Friday, three police officers were fatally shot while trying to serve a domestic violence warrant. 

What was described as an ambush also killed a police K-9 and four other people were wounded. The shooting suspect, Lance Storz, 49, has been arrested and has pleaded guilty to multiple counts of murder and attempted murder.

Sports: Dodgers win, Angels lost

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 7-2 at home on Saturday. 

That victory allowed the Blue Crew (now 49-28) to open a 4.5-game lead over the Padres in the NL west.

The Los Angeles Angels were defeated 9-1 by the Houston Astros. That loss dropped the Halos (37-43) into fourth place in the AL West.

On Friday, the Angels lost 8-1 to the Houston Astros, but the Dodgers defeated the San Diego Padres 5-1.

Weather: Play it cool

The forecast for the West Orange County area is for slightly cooler days as partly cloudy conditions move in. Sunday is expected to have a daytime high of 76 (overnight low of 62) with some clouds. The Fourth of July should see a return of the sun with a high of 79 (low of 64), but partly cloudy skies are expected all the way though Thursday.
