Park It Here Dept. Kudos to the City of Garden Grove – and especially to John Montanchez and Janet Pelayo of the Community Services Department – for the recent opening of the great re-fresh of the Woodbury Park.
We visited there – of course, along with our four-legged newshound Shadow – the other day and were tremendously impressed. What was once a dowdy, mostly-featureless stretch of grass has been transformed into a gleaming showpiece with spectacular playground equipment, a new and gorgeous swimming pool, a skate spot, walking and biking paths. etc.
It even has a watering station for furry park-goers.
I remember reading a visionary article called “Beyond Boosterism.” that made the argument that public amenities – such as parks – were a key factor in attracting new residents and businesses, as well as keeping what you have.
Made sense to me then, and especially now.
Read the Small Print Dept.: I was amused to see the addition of the word “Liberty” in English, Vietnamese and Spanish at the top of the street sign for Traylor Way in Garden Grove.
The lettering was so small here that you had to drive 10 miles an hour and squint to see it. That’s a major improvement from the big Charlie Kirk Way sign attached to the All-American Way in Westminster.
I’m all in favor of liberty, but – folks – street signs are designed to help people find their way around town and not for political, personal or philosophical messages.
Unless we get a Pizza Boulevard sign added to one of our streets …
