Russia backs out of grain deal

RUSSIA has backed out of grain shipping deal with Ukraine (Shutterstock).

Russia on Saturday withdrew from a grain deal that had allowed exports from Ukrainian ports in reaction to what Moscow claimed was a massive attack on its Russian naval forces in the Black Sea by drones.

The decision could have the effect of increases in global food prices as well as worse hunger in Africa and other poor areas, according to The New York Times.

Ukraine has not claimed credit – or blame – for the drone attack. Russia’s argument for backing out of the grain deal is that the drone attacks mean that shipping in the Black Sea has become too dangerous for civilian craft.
