Sents edge Aztecs, 2-1, in OT

LA QUINTA girls’ soccer team advanced to the CIF-SS Division 7 finals, losing 2-1 in overtime on Friday (GGUSD photo).

Brisa Medina scored two goals – including the game-winner in overtime – to give Magnolia High School  of Anaheim the CIF-SS Division girls soccer championship on Friday, defeating La Quinta High of Westminster 2-1

The Sentinels, champions of the Orange League, finished  with a 17-9-1 record. The Aztecs, champs of the Garden Grove League, finished 16-7-5 overall.

In Friday’s match at the Bolsa Grande High School stadium in Garden Grove, the Sents scored once in the first half, but the Aztecs evened things up with a tally in the second half.

That set up Medina’s decider. Also starring for Magnolia was Xuan Mai Johnson, who had six saves.

Both teams are expected to advance to the state regional tournament.
