Cluster weapons for Ukraine?

Should the United States send the controversial cluster munitions to Ukraine as it continues its counterattack to drive Russian troops back?

The Associated Press is reporting that the Biden Administration has decided to go ahead with providing them as part of a military aid package estimated at $800 million.

Cluster munitions are controversial because they send small deadly metal pellets at a entrenched enemy and can cause casualties to civilians. Some American allies won’t approve on humanitarian ground.

The New York Times reports that both Ukraine and Russia are using the cluster arms, but Ukraine is running low on it supply as it presses forward to reclaim land from the invaders.

Alzheimer’s Drug gets approval

A drug which may have a modest impact on slowing the effects of Alzheimer’s Disease has received full approval from the Food and Drug Agency.

According to The New York Times, the drug – leqembi – doesn’t stop the progress of the disease, but it can slow it for people with mild symptoms.

The drug will be sold with a label warning stating that it might cause “serious and life-threatening events” including brain bleed.

More hurricanes on the way?

An “above average” hurricane season is predicted for this year by some researchers.

United Press International is reporting that there will be “at least four” major hurricanes and 18 “named” storms, according to a report from Colorado State University.

The prediction comes from knowledge the sea surface temperature are at record highs.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had earlier predicted only a 30 percent of “above normal” hurricane activity.

Dodgers sink the Pirates, 5-2

A combined effort of pitching and hitting lifted the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 5-2 victory Thursday over the Pittsburgh Pirates at home.

The Dodgers got home runs from Freddie Freeman (his 15th) and Max Muncy (20th) to account for four of their runs.

Julio Urias (6-5) pitched a solid start, working six innings and yielding three hits and two runs. He struck out eight batters and walked one.

With the win, the Blue Crew is 49-38, one-half game back of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League West . race. It’s the team’s third victory in four games against the Bucs.

Next for the Dodgers is a two-game series Friday and Saturday hosting the Angels.

Weather: Slowly warming

The outlook for our West Orange County area is temperatures getting gradually warmer. While partly cloudy conditions will continue through the weekend, the thermometer should creep up. Friday’s daytime high should be 74 with an overnight low of 60. Saturday is expected to be 75 (61) and Sunday to reach 77 (60). Monday is predicted to hit 81 (62).
