Traditions clash: Vaqs v. Colony

When the Anaheim High Colonists football team takes on the Rancho Alamitos High Vaqueros on Thursday night at Bolsa Stadium, it will be a matchup of programs with proud traditions.

Rancho has won or shared five consecutive Garden Grove League championships under coach Mike Enright.

Anaheim, one of Orange County’s oldest high schools, was a major statewide power in the 50s and 60s with Clare Van Hoorebeke.

In more recent times, the Colonists have been up-and-down, but finished second twice in the tough Orange League in recent seasons under coach Lanny Booher.

The Vaqs will come into the game 1-0 after beating La Sierra; the Colonists are 0-2, having lost to Santiago and Ocean View. Both teams are young, so this may be a test not only of tradition but of underclassmen stepping up.

Here’s the schedule for area high school football, subject to change (as always). Pacifica and Edison have the week off. All games are non-league and scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
