Laphonza Butler has been chosen to become California’s junior Senator following the death of Dianne Feinstein.
Butler is the president of EMILY’s List, an organization that seeks to elect Democratic women to political office. Her appointment by Gov. Gavin Newsom will be officially announced on Monday, according to the Politico website. She will likely be sworn in on Wednesday.
Laphonza will allow her party to maintain the slim lead that Democrats have to control the Senate.
She will serve in that post until the November 2024 election, when the seat will be on the ballot.
