Laphonza Butler has been chosen to become California’s junior Senator following the death of Dianne Feinstein.
Butler is the president of EMILY’s List, an organization that seeks to elect Democratic women to political office. Her appointment by Gov. Gavin Newsom will be officially announced on Monday, according to the Politico website. She will likely be sworn in on Wednesday.
Laphonza will allow her party to maintain the slim lead that Democrats have to control the Senate.
She will serve in that post until the November 2024 election, when the seat will be on the ballot.
Rams finish off Colts; Angels end with win
After yielding a 23-0 lead, the Los Angeles Rams scored a touchdown in overtime to defeat the Indianapolis Colts 29-23 at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday.
Matthew Stafford threw a 22-yard scoring pass to wide receiver Puka Nacua to allow the Rams to square their record to 2-2.
Stafford, playing with an injured hip in the second half, completed 27 of 40 passes for 319 yards and one score. Nacua caught nine passes for 163 yards and the winning TD. Kyren Williams rushed for 103 yards and two touchdowns.
At SoFi Stadium, the Los Angeles Chargers withstood a second half charge by the Las Vegas Raiders to win 24-17 and improve to 2-2.
Justin Herbert passed for 167 yards and one score and rushed for 27 yards and two TDs.
The Los Angeles Angels completed a disappointing 2023 season with a victory on Sunday, defeating the Oakland Athletics 7-3 in Anaheim.
The Halos, who finish in fourth place in the American League West, conclude with a 73-89 record. Brandon Drury capped the season with a 3-for-4 performance, hitting two homers (25th and 26th) and a double for three RBIs.
In San Francisco, the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Giants 5-2 to finish the regular season with their 100th win of the season. Enrique Hernandez hit a three-run home run in the sixth, his 11th homer of 2023.
The Blue Crew (100-62) have a bye in the NL playoffs’ first round and will start the Division Series on Oct 7 against the winner of the Miami-Arizona series.
Weather: The sun will go for a run
After all these clouds and even showers of the last few weeks, our West Orange County should be getting a nice run of sunny days. The forecast calls for that starting Monday and continuing through Sunday. Monday should have a daytime high of 74 with and overnight low of 58, followed by 81 (60) on Tuesday and 89 (67) on Wednesday.
