It wasn’t that long ago that Bolsa Grande and La Quinta were semi-permanent occupants of the bottom of the Garden Grove League in football.
But now the Matadors and Aztecs are alone at the top of the GGL with 2-0 league records, setting up a possible showdown on Friday, Oct. 27 for the league title.
On Friday, Bolsa Grande raced out to a 21-0 first quarter lead and hung on to outlast a strong charge by Santiago to win 34-28. The Mats and 5-2 overall and the Cavaliers are 3-4 and 0-2 in league.
La Quinta (5-2 overall) kept pace by beating winless Loara (0-7, 0-2) by 31-24.
In the Sunset League, Edison (4-3, 2-0) defeated Huntington Beach (3-4, 0-2) 47-20 and remained tied with Los Alamitos (5-2, 2-0), which defeated Newport Harbor (3-4, 1-1) by 62-14.
The Chargers and Griffins are scheduled to meet on Friday, Oct. 27 at Scheue Field.
Pacifica (1-6, 0-2) lost 42-14 to Crean Lutheran of Irvine to join Valencia (3-4, 0-2) at the bottom of the Empire League.
