Budget deal is announced

A budget agreement between Democratic and Republican leaders in Congress was announced on Sunday, apparently a move toward heading off a government  shutdown later in January.

The deal, as announced by Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, would add another $16 billion in cuts in federal spending over that agreed to in an earlier agreement reached last year.

Under the agreement, there would be $886 billion in spending for defense and $772 billion in domestic (non-military) spending.

The deal reached on Sunday is unrelated to a proposed arrangement to continue to spend money to support Ukraine and Israel in exchange for tougher rules and policies at the U.S-Mexican border regarding asylum seekers.

Sports: Rams rally to beat 49ers

With both teams benching most of their starters, the Los Angeles Rams slipped past the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara 21-20 on Sunday.

With the win, the Rams finished the regular season with a 10-7 mark, having won six of their last seven games. The result is the Rams advance to the first round of the NFL playoffs against the Detroit Lions (12-5), who are quarterbacked by former Ram QB Jared Goff.

Trailing 20-7 at the half, the Rams shut out the Niners in the second half and scored 16 points including a key two-point conversion.

Carson Wentz threw for two touchdowns and ran for another score. He passed for 163 yards (17 of 24) and rushed for 56 yards.

The Los Angeles Chargers (5-12) had a less-successful conclusion to their season, losing 13-12 to the Kansas City Chiefs (11-6).
