In an effort to crack down on crime and other problems associated with some motels and hotels in and around the Beach Boulevard area, the Stanton City Council voted Tuesday night to enact an urgency ordinance declaring a moratorium on new or altered public lodging business.

The vote was 4-0 with Councilmember Hong Alyce Van (District 2) absent.
Problems cited in support of the ordinance included prostitution, drugs, robberies, gang activity and the use of deadly weapons.

This ordinance is intended to allow the city time to study the impacts and protect the residents’ safety, said a staff report.

The moratorium will be in place for 10 months and 15 days pending a study and the preparation of an update to the city’s municipal and zoning codes.

Additionally, the city has adopted a new logo with colors of green orange and periwinkle.
