Our local ‘believe it or not’

HUNTINGTON BEACH in its days as an oil drilling center. Also known as “The good old days” to some people (File photo).

Can you believe that …

• The Westminster City Council spent hours recently arguing over when the Republic of (South) Vietnam become independent? That one of those arguing – who has been known to wear a dress modeled after that nation’s flag and has vowed to be willing to die for her former birthplace – knows so little about its history?

• Can you believe that the Huntington Beach City Council majority chose a “Celebration Calendar” that devoted a month to “Black Gold” (oil) and passed up one devoted to Black Americans?

• Gilbert Street in Garden Grove has recently been blessed with a “bike path” system which – in parts – is just a stripe of white paint along a narrow roadway where cars park in the “bike lane” and there are stretches with no curbs, gutters, sidewalks or paving?

• Those opposed to development of the Willowick Golf Course (located in Santa Ana, but owned by the City if Garden Grove) in favor of more affordable housing have managed to stall or perhaps kill a project which could have provided hundreds of jobs that would have helped people in the adjacent low-income neighborhood to afford better housing?

• The folks – mostly young people – who showed up at area city council meetings after the Floyd George murder in 2020 to complain about police practices and vowed to work hard to make a change have disappeared entirely and have not been heard from since?
