The flying of American flags on utility poles along certain streets for specific periods and deciding which is the “affirmation date” for the recognition of the flag of former Republic of Vietnam are on the agenda of Wednesday night’s meeting of the Westminster City Council.

Before the council is a request to hang flags of the United States on light poles along Westminster Boulevard between Bolsa Chica Road and Bushard Street and along All American Way and 13th Street from All American Way to Beach Boulevard annually from the Friday before Memorial Day and through July 4, and from Nov. 1-14, and to “provide direction for the placement of the flags.”

Additionally, the council will take up a proposed resolution creating an annual Day of Affirmation to recognize the flag of the former Republic of (South) Vietnam and selecting the appropriate day to do so.
At its last council meeting, Mayor Chi Charlie Nguyen and Councilmember Amy Phan West (District 1) engaged in a lengthy verbal exchange over whether the country became independent from French colonial rule in 1950 or 1955.

There will be a closed session at 4 p.m. followed by the open session at 6 p.m. The council will meet in its chambers at 8200 Westminster Blvd.
