What’s being considered a long-shot proposal to get Congress to approve of a border security bill that would clear the way for more aid to Ukraine was revealed on Sunday.
A group of Democratic and Republican Senators have created a compromise bill which would make seeking asylum more difficult, increasing detention capacity and shutting down the border with Mexico completely if more than an average of 5,000 migrants try to cross the border on any given day.
Senate Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York said he will put the issue before the Senate for a vote on Wednesday.
However Mike Johnson, the Republican Speaker of the House Mike called the bill “dead on arrival” in the House of Representatives, and former president Donald Trump has voiced his opposition to the legislation.

Although South Carolina is a reliably red state, it has a large African American population, and the primary was seen as a test of the Black vote which is a bulwark of the Democratic coalition.
