A man was arrested Friday night after a fatal traffic accident in Huntington Beach that took the life of a 55-year-old motorist.

According to the HBPD, the incident took place at about 9:30 p.m. on Edinger Avenue east of Edwards Street. Involved were a white 2017 Chevrolet Silverado truck and a silver 2010 Toyota subcompact Prius.

Arriving officers found the driver of the Prius, a Huntington Beach resident. He was transported to a local hospital and later pronounced deceased. The driver of the Silverado, a 24-year-old Huntington Beach man, fled the scene on foot, say police, but was apprehended by officers quickly.

The preliminary investigation indicates the Prius was traveling westbound on Edinger just east of Edwards Street. The Silverado was also traveling westbound – at what police are calling “an unsafe speed” – and crashed into the Prius.

Police arrested the driver of the truck for vehicular manslaughter as well as suspicion of driving under the influence. The investigation is ongoing and anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it is encouraged to call HBPD Investigator C. Houlson at (714) 536-5670.
