The Texas-Mexican border became a political as well as legal source of conflict as President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump journeyed to the Rio Crane to speak about the issue of immigration.
At the same time, U.S. District Judge David Erza granted a preliminary injunction blocking a new Texas law that allows police to arrest and deport migrants believed to have entered the country illegally.
Ezra wrote in his ruling that the federal government has sole authority over immigration matters and that “nullification” of federal law is unconstitutional and has been since the Civil War.
Biden pushed for the passage of bipartisan border security legislation and asked Trump to help get it passed. Trump blamed Biden for problems at the Rio Grande. “They’re being let into our country and it’s horrible.” he said.
Short-term spending bill Ok’d
A shutdown of many federal agencies that would have occurred on Saturday was averted on Thursday when Congress passed another short-term appropriations bill and goes to President Joe Biden to be signed.
The new agreement is good for March 8 to 22 and – lawmakers hope – will be replaced soon by a final agreement.
According to Speaker of the House Mike Johnson a comprehensive deal is near.
“We’ll get the job done,” he said.
The House of Representatives voted 329-00 for the bill and the Senate followed with a 77-13 approval.
