One man is dead, another in the hospital and a third in jail facing a murder charge after an altercation in Westminster on Friday afternoon.

According to Sgt. Alan Aoki of the WPD, Isaias Saquic-Saquic, 35, of Westminster is accused of the stabbing death of Alvaro Martin-Perez, 48, also of Westminster. He is also being charged with attempted murder.

Officers were called to an apartment complex in the 7300 block of 21st Street (between Hoover and Goldenwest streets) around 1 p.m. on Friday in regards to a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival they found residents holding down a man later determined to be the attacker and eventual suspect.

Upon investigation, officers learned that an argument between the suspect and one of his roommates escalated into Saquic-Saquic allegedly stabbing his roommates several times with a knife. The victim was taken to a local hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

However, during the initial fracas, a “Good Samaritan” neighbor – Martin-Perez – sought to help the attacked man and was also stabbed repeatedly and died from his injuries. More neighbors jumped in and were able to subdue Saquic-Saquic and hold him until officers arrived.

“Mr. Perez’s actions were nothing less than heroic,” said Police Chief Darin Lenyi. “Tragically, his efforts to protect his neighbor cost him his life. I have no doubt his bravery saved the lives of others in the area. On behalf of the members of the WPD, we extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family.”

The WPD Detective Bureau is handling the investigation. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call the WPD watch commander at (714) 898-3767.
