It’s tournament time but there’s some rainfall in the forecast

It’s tournament time in the worlds of high school baseball and softball, but that is often the time for rain as well.

The most prominent of those events – the Michelle Carew softball tournament and the Anaheim Lions baseball tournament – have already produced some drama, but forecasts of rain on Saturday and Sunday may interrupt all that.

Topping developments in Carew action was the first loss of the season for the Pacifica High softball team.

On Thursday the M’s bested Calexico 8-1, but followed that with a 2-1 loss to Canyon High of Anaheim.

On Friday, the Mariners suffered their second loss, falling 5-1 to Lutheran High of Orange.

As the week began, the Mariners were ranked number one in CIF-SS Division 1, as well as in the state and nation by MaxPreps. After the losses, the M’s are 15-2.

Empire League play is scheduled to resume on Thursday, April 4, hosting Tustin. Pacifica is 3-0 in league play and the Tillers are 0-2 and 5-9 overall.

In Surf League baseball on Thursday, Tyler Bellerose and Trent Grindlinger combined to pitch a no-hitter in Huntington Beach’s 2-0 win over Los Alamitos.

Bellerose worked the first 6.1 innings and Grindlinger closed the door by striking out the last two Griffin batters. The Oilers are 11-4 overall and 4-1 in the Sunset-Surf League.

On Friday in Golden West League softball action, Segerstrom and Garden Grove remained unbeaten in league play.

The Argonauts (7-8 overall and 2-0 in the GWL), defeated Westminster 13-0, and the Jaguars (8-8-1 and 4-0) edged Ocean View (8-9, 2-2) by 4-3.

Grove knocked out 18 hits in a five-inning game, including three by Serena Barragan.

She scored two runs and drove in three. Also with three RBIs were Kayen Connaty and Taylor Dooley.
