New cease-fire proposal studied

A new Israeli proposal for a cease-fire in Gaza is reportedly being revived by Hamas.

The proposal comes as Israel prepares for a new offensive into the city of Rafah.

Egypt is seeking to broker a deal and end the war which has led to tens of thousands of civilian casualties, mostly among Palestinians in Gaza.

Details of the proposal have not been made public, but it is reportedly in response to an earlier offer by Hamas which was for a six-week pause in the fighting and an exchange of 40 Israeli for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.

The conflict started on Oct. 7, 2023 when Hamas militants raided into Israel, killing an estimated 1,200 people, including both soldiers and civilians. Hostages were seized and some are still being held. Israel’s response has been to stage an offensive through areas of Gaza believed to be controlled by Hamas, where an estimated 30,000 people have died.

Growing protests in support of Palestine on college campuses led to almost 200 people being arrested at colleges across the United States.

Since April 18 when a large protest at Columbia University in New York led to police intervention, over 700 protesters have been arrested. Campuses affected range from Northeastern University, Arizona State and Indiana.

Commencement ceremonies at USC have been cancelled in response to the uproar after the school cancelled a planned valedictorian speech by a Palestinian student that was feared to be greeted by disorder.
