Pacifica and Garden Grove high schools began their rivalry back in 1966 and the Argonauts won the first four games, but a lot has changed since then.

The two teams met in a non-league contest at Bolsa Stadium on Friday night and the Mariners had it all their way, prevailing 28-0.

Neither team looked good in a penalty-marred first half, but Pacifica managed to take a 7-0 lead into halftime after a 13-yard scoring run by Armando Torres with 4:15 remaining in the second quarter.

The Mariners dominated in the second half, including David Carlson’s return of an Argonaut fumble for the final score of the game.

Pacifica (1-1) will try to make it two in a row on Thursday when they visit Northwood High of Irvine. The Argonauts (1-1) will host Santa Ana next Friday.

Edison, our top-ranked West Orange County team, suffered another close loss, falling 22-21 to Yorba Linda in another non-league game. Savelio Niumata passed for 164 yards and two scores, and Julius Gillick rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown but the Chargers (0-2) succumbed to a late Mustang rally.

Trailing 21-7 after three quarters, Yorba Linda came back to prevail with a TD with five seconds on the clock.

Huntington Beach (1-1) got another big night from quarterback Brady Edmunds, who threw for 354 yards and four scores, but Trabuco Hills still prevailed, coming back from a two-touchdown deficit to win 42-38 at Cap Sheue Field.

Marina High ran its early record to 2-0 with a 27-13 win over Wilson High of Long Beach on the road, led by Gabe Carles, who rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown.

The Vikings rolled to a 27-0 lead before the Bruins could answer with two late scores.

Los Amigos, the defending Garden Grove League co-champs (with Rancho Alamitos) rolled up a 34-0 halftime lead and went on to a 46-0 victory over Silver Valley of Yermo, California for a second consecutive win.
