Protests in Tel Aviv calling for a cease-fire agreement aren’t moving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
In response to demonstrations sparked by the death of six Israeli hostages – including one American – Netanyahu said “No one is more committed to freeing the hostages than me … [but] no one will preach to me on this issue.”
The sticking point in negotiations over the struggle between Israeli forces and Hamas militants is that Netanyahu is insisting that Israel retain a narrow strip of land along Gaza’s border with Egypt.
That, he says, “is the oxygen of Hamas,” alleging that that’s the place where Hamas smuggles weapons and ammunition into Gaza.
But President Joe Biden insisted the negotiators were “very close” to making a cease-fire deal.
