Huntington Beach will have its fourth city manager in five years as the city council has appointed a new acting city manager.
The council last week chose Travis Hopkins and he will assume his duties on Nov. 9, taking over from Interim City Manager Eric Parra, who doubled as police chief. Parra will continue in his role as head of the police department.
In 2023, Parra became interim manager after the resignation of Alfred Zelinka, who served 17 months after coming to Huntington Beach from Riverside in 2022.
Zelinka replaced Oliver Chi, who served from 2019 to 2021 before becoming the city manager of Irvine, where he still serves.
Hopkins has been assistant city manager for five years and worked at Huntington Beach City Hall for 18 years, also serving as public works director and city engineer. Before coming to Surf City, he was employed for the cities of Placentia and Carson.
“Travis Hopkins has an impressive degree of knowledge when it comes to city operations,” said Huntington Beach Mayor Gracey Van Der Mark. “His expertise and broad understanding of multifaceted issues have greatly contributed to the city’s success and efficiency.”
