Do not do what Do did

SUPERVISOR ANDREW DO quit his post and pleaded guilty to felony bribery charges (County of Orange photo).

Andy, Andy, Andy. What were you thinking?

Andrew Do, Orange County Supervisor for the First District, has been in the news the last few weeks and ended his term on the board under a cloud of sulphur for various missteps that have exploded like a carnival balloon.

As you may know, Mr. Do resigned his post on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to federal felony charges of accepting over $550,000 in bribes to direct over $10 million in COVID funds to a charity connected to his daughter, Rhiannon Do.

As it turned out, most of that money – about 85 percent – did not go to provide meals to elderly Vietnamese, as intended.

It’s tough … well, a little bit tough to come down too hard on Mr. Do. In his capacity as county supervisor, he directed $600,000 in funds that went toward improvements in Garden Grove’s historic Main Street. We got lighting in the trees, parklets for outdoor dining and two “wayfinding” signs to aim people to landmarks in the area.

But, upon reflection, even that pointed toward the flaw in the system which will likely see Mr. Do standing tall before a federal judge. Apparently, a county supervisor can sort of assign such largesse like royalty granting dukedoms and knighthoods.

Oversight was – at best – paper-thin and that may have been a temptation to …

But Andy, how could  you not see how repeated requests from the county for proper accounting and proof of service wouldn’t eventually catch up with you and yours? I mean, we expect politicians to bend a rule now and then, but to also have some sense of self-preservation.

So, as it turned out, Mr. Do was not only a corrupt public official but also – here comes the real insult – a dumb corrupt public official.
