The election interference case against Donald Trump, now the president-elect, appears to be ending.

On Monday special counsel Jack Smith asked – through court documents – a federal judge to dismiss the charges that then-president Trump attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 election, according to the Associated Press.

The action is considered to be in line with a policy of not prosecuting presidents while they hold office.

“That prohibition is categorical and does not turn on the gravity of the crimes charged, the strength of the Government’s proof, or the merits of the prosecution, which the Government stands fully behind,” the prosecutors wrote, reports the AP.
It’s considered likely that had Vice President Kamala Harris defeated Trump on Nov. 5, the prosecution would have continued.

Cease-fire between Israel, Helzbollah?

The possibility of a cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah may be increasing, as The New York Times is reporting that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated he might consider a cease-fire agreement with the Lebanon-based Hezbollah militia.

According to The Times, a proposed arrangement would allow Israel to resume fighting if the Hezbollah resumed its attacks.

The reported terms of the deal call for Israel to withdraw troops from Lebanon within 60 days and for Hezbollah to move further south into Lebanon, a greater distance from Israel. Lebanese armed forces would then take up station there, creating a “buffer zone” between the two belligerents.
