Don’t underestimate Aztecs

LA QUINTA has the best record of any local prep girls basketball team (Shutterstock).

Which is the best girls’ best basketball team in our West Orange County area? You could make a pretty good argument that it’s La Quinta High of Westminster.

While the Aztecs are “only” ranked third in our High Five (Marina and Huntington Beach are first and second), the blue and gold have the best record at 20-5 and are unbeaten in league play.

They’ve won many of their games by 20 or more points, and won 12 of their last 13 games. Daryl Funai’s team is very balanced, with the top scorer being Katie Nguyen, who is averaging 8.8 points, followed by Katelyn Vo with 8.2 points a game.

Vo is the top rebounder with seven a game and also leads in steals, assists and shots blocked.

Tough league indeed …

Our first- and second-rated teams – Marina (14-10) and Huntington Beach (13-10) – play in the tough Sunset League and are in fourth and fifth there.

They have the bad luck of being in the same conference with Los Alamitos (17-6), Fountain Valley (16-7) and Corona del Mar (14-9).

For the curious, the “big” upcoming game will be the final league contest with Los Al (7-1 so far) visiting Fountain Valley (7-2) on Feb. 3.

But back to our locals .. Rylee Bradley, a junior from Marina, is averaging 21.2 points a game. Shelby Nguyen has 5.5 rebounds a game and Maria Tejeda has 2.3 assists on average.

It’s just the numbers

Our High 5 rankings are based on the statistical calculations of the MaxPreps.com website. They seek to factor in not just wins and losses but also strength of opponent, etc.

It’s not a perfect system, but probably better than the opinions of sports writers who couldn’t possibly see games played by all of the teams in the coverage area.
