The first steps to return illegal immigrants from the United States to their native countries on Sunday hit some snags.
Two planeloads of migrants from Colombia were flown to Bogota, but were denied permission to land and returned to the U.S., according to the Associated Press.
A similar operation for Mexico never got off the ground when that nation announced it would similarly not allow the planes to land.
President Donald Trump announced he would impose tariffs ranging from 25 to 50 percent on Colombian goods coming into the U.S. as punishment.
Columbian President Gustavo Petro said that his main objection was that the migrants were handcuffed and not treated with dignity, and would accept them if the U.S. altered the conditions of transit to be more “humane.”
