‘Tariff War’ may be heating up

The “tariff war” between the United States and some of its biggest trade partners intensified as two of the nations targeted have responded with tariffs on American goods.

Canada has replied to President Donald Trump’s imposition of 25 percent on goods coming from “up north” with a matching 25 percent levy on American goods moving into Canada, according to the Associated Press.

Mexico also vowed to reply to the 25 percent tariff. China, which will be targeted for 10 percent, has not made a public reply.

Trump, who vowed during the 2024 presidential campaign to reduce consumer costs, conceded Sunday in a social media post that “Will there be some pain? Yes, maybe (maybe not). But we will make America great again, and it will all be worth the price that must be paid.”

More bodies recovered from D.C. crash

The remains of 55 of the 67 people killed in the mid-air collision of a commercial jet and an Army helicopter have been recovered .

The New York Times is reporting that the remains have also been “positively identified.” Authorities said they didn’t know when the remaining 12 bodies would be recovered and identified but expressed optimism that they would be found.

Salvage crews will begin lifting the wreckage of the jet from the Potomac River into which it fell after the collision. The process is expected to take three days.

Groundhog says “more winter”

Punxsutawney Phil, the ground hog meteorologist from western Pennsylvania, came out of his hibernation and saw his shadow on Sunday, indicating six more weeks of winter-y weather.

But ABC News claims that the famous rodent’s predictions are no more reliable that the effect of flipping a coin.

Sports: Anthony Davis traded to Mavericks

In a trade that – reportedly – even the players and coaches involved were unaware, the Los Angeles Lakers traded forward-center Anthony Davis to the Dallas Mavericks for guard Luka Donic.

Each team has represented the switch as a key element in their drive to an NBA championship. Davis, a top scorer and rebounder, will be 32 in March. He’s averaging 25.7 points a game and 11.9 rebounds per game.
Donic is 25 and has averaged 28.1 points a game so far this season and 7.8 assists.

Donic may make his Laker debut on Tuesday when the team plays cross-city rival Clippers. The two teams are battling for first place in the Pacific Division.

Weather: A Wet Midweek

A modest winter rainstorm is expected to bring showers to our West Orange County cities Wednesday and Thursday. The forecast calls for a daytime high of 68 on Monday with an overnight low of 52. Fog is expected in the morning with clouds in the afternoon.

Morning clouds are expected on Tuesday with afternoon sun, and temperatures of 64 (55). Showers should arrive on Wednesday; there’s a 58 percent chance of rain. The high should 64, the low 55. Thursday will be similar with showers and 64 (54). The chance of rain is set at 43 percent.
