President Donald Trump has agreed to “pause” threatened tariffs on Canada and Mexico after those nations promised to step up security at their borders with the United States.
According to the Associated Press, Trump will wait 30 days before imposing the 25 percent levy on goods imported into the U.S. “I am very pleased with this initial outcome, and the tariffs announced on Saturday will be paused for a 30-day period to see whether or not a final economic deal can be structured.”
Mexico has vowed to send 10,000 troops to the American border and both nations have agreed to work closely with the U.S, to battle illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
A 10 percent tariff on imports from China is still in place, reports the AP, but talks between Trump and Xi Jinping, president of China, are expected to take place soon.
End all regulations, says Musk
Billionaire businessman Elon Musk, the leader of the non-governmental Department of Government Efficiency on Monday called for an end to all federal regulations.
According to the HuffPost, Musk was on a public call on his website X (formerly Twitter). He said, “Regulations, basically, should be default gone. Not default here, default there, default gone. And if it turns out that we missed the mark on a regulation, we can always add it back in.”
He also “appeared to claim credit” for the shutdown of the U.S. Agency for International Development, which provides humanitarian projects worldwide. Musk called USAID a corrupt “ball of worms.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Monday that the agency would be absorbed into the State Department, according to United Press International.
Democrats called the “dismantling” of USAID illegal and – since it was created by an act of Congress – can only be ended by Congress.
