Trump may pause levies on imported foreign auto parts

A temporary exemption of the auto industry from the tariffs he recently imposed is being considered by President Donald Trump.

The Associated Press is reporting that the president said, “I’m looking at something to help some of the car companies with it.” Acknowledging that the relocation supplies and production from Canada, Mexico, etc. might be time-consuming, he said, “They might need a little bit of time because they are going to make them here.”

According to the AP, Trump maybe considering reversals on some of his announced tariffs in the face of adverse reactions on Wall Street, which had the effect of increasing interest rates on U.S. debt.

Harvard defies Trump; funds frozen

Harvard University’s defiance of the Trump administration’s demands had led to the federal government’s freeze on $2.2 billion in grants to the school, along with a $60 million contract.

The New York Times is reporting that on Friday the Trump administration sent a letter to Harvard demanding that the power of students and faculty over the university be reduced, to report to the federal government foreign students who “commit conduct violations” and ensure that faculty departments are “viewpoint diverse.”

University President Alan Garber issued a statement on Monday saying, “No government — regardless of which party is in power — should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study and inquiry they can pursue.”

Conditions in our West Orange County cities continue to get chillier as spring takes hold. Tuesday’s daytime high will be at 66 with an overnight low of 54. The morning will have some fog, giving way to sun in the afternoon. Wednesday should be identical but Thursday will cool to 64 (55) with mostly cloudy skies. Friday will be even “frostier” at 62 (53) with a 40 percent chance of showers.
