Police grab suspect, derringer

It wasn’t a Saturday Night Special, but it was a famous handgun, or one that looked liked it.

On Saturday night Westminster Police Department detectives and Orange County Probation Department officers were conducting proactive enforcement when they spotted a known probationer and documented gang member driving in the area of Sigler Park.

Officers made a traffic stop and they found a loaded firearm in the vehicle. It was a small, easily concealable gun similar to the “derringer” of the kind used by John Wilkes Booth to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln in 1865.

The weapon was found to have been reported stolen. The subject was booked into Orange County Jail for probation violation, being a felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a stolen firearm and ammunition and possession of a firearm by a gang member.
