Seven local baseball and softball teams survived the opening round of the CIF-SS playoffs on Thursday.
In baseball action, Santiago defeated Public Safety Academy 14-2 and Garden Grove bested Carter 4-1.
But two others lost. Rancho Alamitos fell 7-3 to YULA and Ocean View was defeated by Hillcrest 4-2.
In softball, five locals won. Los Amigos bested Capistrano Valley Christian 15-7, Westminster topped Moreno Valley 7-5, Huntington Beach squeezed by Charter Oak 8-7 and Rancho Alamitos slammed Hoover 15-1.
Losing were Bolsa Grande, which fell 20-10 to Hawthorne, and Pacifica, which was defeated by El Modena 8-5. That was the fourth game this season between Vanguards and Mariners, who finished in a three-way tie for the Crestview League title with Cypress.
Also going home after one game was Santiago, a 14-1 loser to Kaiser.
