DHS fumbles on ‘Sanctuary City’

Hey, Department of Homeland Security. It’s “Surf City” not a “Sanctuary City.”

In an ironic turn of events, Huntington Beach on Thursday was incorrectly listed as one of over 500 “sanctuary jurisdictions” across the nation.

“Sanctuary cities” are generally described as municipalities that have decided or declared themselves to have limited cooperation with federal authorities who are seeking to identify or deport people who are allegedly illegal immigrants.

The Huntington Beach City Council in January 2005 passed a resolution declaring the city “a non-sanctuary city.”

“I’ve done plenty of media interviews on this,” said Mayor Pat Burns. “There should be no confusion whatsoever that we are a non-sanctuary city.”

Others misidentified by DHS, he said, are Baltimore, Las Vegas and Shasta County in California.

Huntington Beach, with a conservative city council, is the only Orange County city on the list.
