Russia’s big drone and missile attack on Ukrainian cities

For the first time in the war between Russia and Ukraine, drones have struck a government building in Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital.

The New York Times is reporting that Russia sent 805 exploding drones and decoys across Ukraine in what’s being described as the biggest drone attack of the war.

Additionally, Russia launched 13 cruise and ballistic missiles. The Ukrainian Air Force said that nine of the missiles and almost 60 of the drones “evaded air defenses and made impact.”

The attack comes as President Donald Trump is trying to negotiate an end to the war between the two nations.

Drawing on images from the Vietnam era film “Apocalypse Now,” President Donald Trump on Sunday displayed on Truth Social an image with himself dressed like Robert Duvalls’ military character in the film, with helicopters flying, an urban skyline in the background and flames off to the side.

The text reads “Chicago is about to find out why it’s called the Department of WAR.”

JB Pritzer, the Democratic governor of Illinois, responded, “The President of the United States is threatening to go war with an American city. This is not a joke, This is not normal. Donald Trump isn’t a strong man, he’s a scared man. Illinois won’t be intimidated by a wannabe dictator.”

Sports: Rams beat Texans, 14-9;

Angels, Dodgers also win

The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Houston Texans 14-9 at SoFi Stadium in the NFL 2025 season opener for both teams. Matthew Stafford, who didn’t play in any pre-season games, threw for two scores and 245 yards. That made him the 10th player in league history to pass for 60,000 career yards.

In  MLB action, the Los Angels Angels edged the Athletics 4-3 in Anaheim and that enabled the Halos to avoid slipping into fifth and last place in the AL West. Jo Adell hit a two-run home run in the first, his 35th homer of the season. The Angels are 67-76 and the A’s are 66-78.

At Camden Yards in Baltimore, Shohei Ohtani hit his 47th and 48th home runsof 2025 as the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Orioles 5-2 and protected their one-game lead in the NL West,

The Blue Crew (79-64) also got a strong pitching performance from starter Clayton Kershaw (10-2). He worked 5.2 innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs. He struck out eight batters and walked one.  The win allowed team (79-64) to snap a five-game losing streak. The Padres (76-65) also on  Sunday,

Weather: A little cooler

Pretty soon we in our West Orange County cities will be enjoying fall-like temperatures with highs in the 70s.

The forecast calls for a daytime high of 82 on Monday with an overnight low of 65 with partly cloudy skies. Tuesday will see a drop to 76 (66) with mostly sunny skies. Wednesday will be similar at 76 (65) and mostly sunny.

Thursday will be partly cloudy and 76 (65).
