A motorist “driving recklessly and running red lights” is dead after the vehicle smashed into a utility pole in the predawn hours in Huntington Beach on Saturday.

According to the HBPD, police received calls around 12:50 a.m. of a vehicle moving wildly in the area of Pacific Coast Highway and Brookhurst Street.

The speeding vehicle was spotted near Beach and Talbert Avenue and police tried to make an enforcement stop but the driver didn’t yield.

In the chase that followed, the suspect vehicle continued to the area of Beach and Warner Avenue where it struck another vehicle. The driver of that auto was not injured.

But the suspect vehicle struck the pole “at a high rate of speed.” Police officers and paramedics tried life-saving measures but the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

The area of Beach and Warner was closed to traffic for a time.
