We’re in the second week of league play for most West Orange County high school football teams, with the “must-win” games for title contenders not yet in sight.

The High Five still features Edison (4-2) on top, followed by Western (4-2), Orange (4-2), Marina (4-2) and Pacifica (3-3).

On the bubble are Westminster (2-4), Ocean View (5-1) and Huntington Beach (5-1). These rankings are based on those used by MaxPreps.com.

Probably the best matchup for the week is a Delta League battle between Western and El Modena on Friday. The Vanguards are 3-3 but have played a fairly tough schedule.

El Mo is 1-0 and Western 0-1 in league action. Their top offensive star is Ethan Sorenson, who has passed for 1,323 yards. For the Pioneers the player to watch is senior running back Skyar Lendsey, who is averaging 101 yards rushing per game.

Fun to watch will be Friday’s Kappa League game between Westminster (2-4 overall, 0-1 in league) and Garden Grove (2-4, 0-1 in league).

Despite their records, these teams have powerful offenses. For Westminster, Beckham Sharp is averaging 184 total yards per game. For Grove, Quentin Pacelli is averaging 294.2 yards rushing per game, and 317.2 total yards.

What about our High Five leader, Edison? The Chargers have the week off after defeating Summit High of Fontana 21-10 last week. But they’ll have their hands full next week when they take on Los Alamitos. The Griffins (7-0) and Edison will open play in the very tough Alpha League, which also includes Mission Viejo and San Clemente.

For context, we note that the Orange County Top 25 has Mission Viejo (6-1) third, Los Alamitos sixth, Edison 14th, Huntington Beach 18th, Western 19th and El Modena 25th.

The Schedule
Thursday: Bolsa Grande vs. Loara, La Quinta vs. Santiago, Magnolia vs. Century, Pacifica vs. Woodbridge.
Friday: Los Amigos vs. Rancho Alamitos, Marina vs. Valencia, Orange vs. Dana Hills, Westminster vs. Garden Grove, Western vs.El Modena.
