Don’t try this at home.
Or, to put it another way, leave law enforcement to the professionals.
A report of a disturbance at Central Park in Huntington Beach on Sunday led to the arrest of an adult suspect on suspicion of arranging to meet a minor to engage in lewd conduct. But it wasn’t quite what police would consider smart.
At about 7:30 p.m., police were told that a “social media film crew” had confronted a male who had allegedly made arrangement for sexual contact with a juvenile male. Or at least that’s what he allegedly thought he had arranged.
Instead, the suspect had been communicating with the social media crew. It turned out, according to the HBPD, that “based on statements and corroborating evidence” officer arrested Jerry Robert Mejias, 61, of Huntington Beach.
“Although we understand the intent,” a statement from police read, “the Huntington Beach Police Department cannot stress enough the dangers of conducting ‘To Catch A Predator’-style investigations and meeting in person.”
Anyone with information related to the alleged crime and arrest is asked to call Detective Sgt. Anthony Pham at (714) 878-5640.
