The past will be honored and the future anticipated on Thursday with the Garden Grove Police Department’s 39th Annual “Call to Duty” Memorial, which will take place from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The ceremony will mark the final memorial service held in front of the current Garden Grove Police Headquarters, located at 11301 Acacia Parkway. It was opened in 1972 and marked the GGPD’s relocation from the old City Hall building.

A new, $152 million expanded state-of-the-art three-story building with an adjoining parking structure is nearing completion and is expected to be ready for occupancy this summer.

The annual service honors the six Garden Grove police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty: Sergeant Myron L. Trapp, Officer Andy Reese, Officer Donald F. Reed, Officer Michael Rainford, Master Officer Howard Dallies Jr., and Lieutenant John Reynolds.

GGPD Captain Luis Payan will officiate the memorial and introduce this year’s guest speaker, retired Garden Grove Police Department Lieutenant Steve Sanders.

The memorial will include a flag-folding ceremony, memorial bell ringing, helicopter flyover, and 21-gun salute. The Bolsa Grande High School Choir will also perform.

On Thursday, May 14, from 10:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., the following street closures will be in effect:
• Eastbound and westbound Acacia Parkway from City Hall to 7th Street
• northbound and southbound Civic Center Drive from Garden Grove Boulevard to Acacia Parkway
In addition, no parking will be permitted along Civic Center Drive and Acacia Parkway from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Parking will be available at the following locations:
